Visit counts

A small script on each page sends the page path, the referring site, a coarse device type, the window width, and how long the tab stayed visible. Words typed into search are not included. Clicks on installer websites, phone numbers, and gear names are counted too.

The server stores a hash of the IP address and browser so repeat visits can be counted. It does not store the IP address. The host may attach an approximate location, such as country and region, from the network request. Counts older than 180 days are deleted. A signed-in operator can review the counts.

If the browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, the visit is not recorded. Known crawlers are not recorded. The admin pages are not recorded, and neither are public pages while an operator is signed in.

Search and filters

Installer search and the build filters are GET forms. The words you type stay in the page address so the results can be shown. There is no account, and those queries are not saved as a profile.

Claim form

The claim form on an installer page is a placeholder. The fields are disabled. It does not send email and it does not save a correction.

Affiliate partners

Affiliate partners may set their own cookies when a reader clicks through to a gear retailer. Those cookies are set by the partner, not by this site. No gear affiliate link is active right now, so that click-through is not on the pages yet.
